Support Service Worker - Housekeeping

Job Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, performs routine, repetitive institutional-type housekeeping tasks and duties as assigned to maintain the cleanliness and sanitary conditions required by the Illinois Department of Public Health and Veterans Affairs. Works without close or continuing personal observation by a supervisor and is given increasingly complex duties and responsibilities such as the operation and simple maintenance of standard equipment, properly completing simple clerical records pertaining to the activities performed and/or assisting with the training of other workers.

  1. Provides the services required to maintain the residential and nursing areas. Sweeps, dry and wet mops, strips, waxes, and buffs hard surfaced floors. Cleans and disinfects walls, furniture, mirrors, wheelchairs, toilet fixtures, bathing or shower areas and its equipment, ventilation grills, fans, light fixtures, lifting equipment, drinking fountains, monitors floors and conditions, and spot mops soiled or wet areas as needed. Cleans dining areas after morning and noon meals are served.
  2. Maintains adequate amounts of paper towels, toilet paper, soap, gloves, and lotions to serve residents and staff. Replaces plastic liners in trash containers as needed. Removes ordinary trash from local wastebaskets and puts it into the outdoor garbage containers. Packages bags or containers classified as Infectious Medical Waste for pickup by a disposal contractor. Collects soiled linen and personal clothing from local containers and delivers it to the laundry area.
  3. Removes and replaces curtains, drapes, and venetian blinds. Cleans and disinfects containers for trash, linen, and personal clothing. Cleans windows, refrigerators, ovens, toasters, dusts, and polished furniture. Cleans common usage outside areas as directed by the supervisor; shovels snow from emergency exits and sidewalks as directed by the supervisor.
  4. Collaborates with the Activity Department for group activities by providing tables and the cleanup of garbage from the activities. Promptly reports supply shortages and equipment problems or repairs needed to the supervisor. Completes simple, written reports, log sheets, and compliance checklists as directed by the supervisor. Discusses with the supervisor the training of new employees.
  5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of routine tasks commonly found in the area of assignment.
  • Requires skill in the basic operation machinery and equipment found in the assigned area.
  • Requires ability to instruct others in simple methods and procedures common to the area.
  • In addition to having a written and spoken knowledge of the English language, candidates may be required to speak and write a foreign language at a colloquial skill level in carrying out position duties in conjunction with non-English speaking individuals.

Physical Requirements

  • May require ability to perform heavy physical work.

Education Degree

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of High School supplemented by six months experience in the support service functional area to which assigned.
